Pioneering diagnostics

Nearly one third of the global population has been infected with tuberculosis, and is either symptomatic or asymptomatic. The recent emergence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis strains and the rising rates of HIV/TB co-infection have created significant new healthcare challenges.

Diagnostic solutions for different healthcare settings

Since its symptoms are non-specific, diagnosing tuberculosis isn’t always easy. Biological analyses are essential since they make it possible to confirm diagnosis of this highly contagious disease.

bioMérieux believes that the risk of tuberculosis transmission in communities due to undetected cases requires widespread access to diagnosis and early detection of the disease. We therefore provide diagnostic solutions for all levels of health systems:

  • At the primary healthcare level, where diagnosis is based primarily on clinical symptoms. bioMérieux offers reagents adapted for traditional microscopy (Ziehl Neelsen reagent) and fluorescence microscopy (new PREVI® Fluo TB range);
  • At the peripheral or district level, where manual culture techniques that are more sensitive than microscopy can be performed on our Lowenstein-Jensen and Coletsos solid phase media;
  • At the central and reference laboratory level, where automated liquid culture methods are better adapted for detecting smear-negative pulmonary tuberculosis; bioMérieux provides the BacT/ALERT® 3D automated liquid culture platform as well as molecular diagnostics from its partner, Gen-Probe.
