The MPN method

  • The most probable number (MPN) technique is a method used to estimate microbial populations through the detection and statistical analysis of the initial sample in a series of dilutions.
  • In short, the probability of detecting a bacterium is greater in a weak dilution than in a strong dilution.
  • bioMérieux has automated and miniaturized this method, which was previously time-consuming and subject to errors due to the numerous steps involved.

Why it’s important

The enumeration of microorganisms present in food products is a good indicator of hygiene, for raw materials, processing, and finished products. A large number of bacteria (also known as spoilage flora) may reveal the presence of pathogenic bacteria but also can alter the product's commercial quality (appearance, smell, taste) and shelf life.

Our product offering

In 2005, bioMérieux launched TEMPO®, the first automated microbiological testing system designed specifically for food-processing applications:

  • enumeration system for bacteria present in food products,
  • intended for the quality control laboratories of food processing companies, as well as independent industrial laboratories,
  • used to test a wide range of food products.
  • The TEMPO range comprises parameters for in the enumeration in food products of:
    • enterobacteria - TEMPO® EB,
    • yeasts and molds - TEMPO® YM,
    • staphylococci (S. aureus) - TEMPO® STA,
    • lactic bacteria - TEMPO® LAB.
  • A connection software enables the exchange of information between the VIDAS® and TEMPO platforms and the computer systems of industrial laboratories, thus ensuring the traceability of analyses, from the initial sample to the final result communicated to the production unit.
  • All TEMPO tests are submitted to the official international agencies (AOAC International, AFNOR, ISO, etc.) for validation, ensuring compliance with strict performance specifications.
